PvE is hard, sometimes there's a fire. Move out of the fire.

Increasing WoW Performance II: Latency

Unlike the previous trick with using Windows Media Player, this one worked for me. I was surprised to see my latency dropping from 120-150 to about 50, so read on to find out how.

For this you will need to dig a bit deeper into the registry of your PC, but don’t get scared, it’s much easier than you may think.

First, go to Start > Run, and type regedit.

A window should pop up.
Find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\

At this point you can click on Favorites > Add to favorites in the menu and add it so you can quickly browse to it in the future.

Now you need to find your network interface. There are probably more than one listed, so check each one. The one where your IP address is listed is what you’re looking for. If you can’t find it, just select the one with the most values in the right pane.
Now, right click on the right pane and select New > DWORD value. Name it TcpAckFrequency. Right click on this entry, select Modify, and in Value Data field type “1” (no quotes).

Click OK and go to next step.

Now find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters

And again, right click somewhere on the right pane, choose New > DWORD value. Name it TCPNoDelay, right click the entry, select Modify and set a value of 1 again.
Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

You’re done. Restart your PC and go check your latency!

Disclaimer: don’t blame me if you mess up something! Follow the steps and everything should go smooth with no harm done. If you have any problems, you’re welcome to post a comment and I’ll try to help. Thanks to elitistjerks for this.
This worked for me like a charm on Windows Xp. If you’re using Vista, I got no idea if it works or not.

Be sure to tell me if this worked for you!

Unlike your previous one, this one does LOOK like it MAY work so I’ll give it a try tonight and will report back on the findings! :)

Already prepped the .REG file to import later to speed up the test process!

  2. Horns says:

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I told a couple of my friends to try it out last week and it worked for them also, so I guess this should work on more PC’s. Hopefully it will for you also

  3. Someone says:

Did some tests: before using the “hack”, I was getting an average 124 ms latency on a couple clean reboots; after using the “hack”, dropped to around 92 ms…

This one stays on for now! :)

    Thks for sharing!

  4. Horns says:

It worked much better for me, I don’t remember ever having latency below 80, and now it’s usually around 50, but even gets to 40ish (36ms on image included with post).

But going from 124 to 92 in your case ain’t bad either for such a small tweak.
I’m glad it worked for you!

  5. Markus says:

I tried this today and my latency dropped from over 200 to around 70…in Shatt no less. I will keep testing this for a couple more days, but it’s looks like it is working great. Thanks for the tip!

will this get you banned from wow? it works great, went to 10 MS. but……when i logged into other games like conterstrike i was banned instantly.

  7. Horns says:

You weren’t banned for this, trust me. It’s a simple registry tweak which does something I’m too lazy to explain here but you can read more on the link provided in the post.
Again, there’s no way in hell you’ll ever get banned for this.

Gonna check this out.. i did the modify now but will check up as i see if it works… i have good speed net from ips, and used winxp sp2 “hack”(rather a patch know as EvID4226Patch223d-en) since it was made, so never really had bad lags, this patch i must say helps lats Ms but it´s most powerfull for DL apps, like Shareaza (ofc the real Shareaza not the malware hoax)

  9. Geden says:

Okay i tested this Tweak on Both WOW and AA as listed before, and in the Wow case my lats has dropped from about 120-80ms to an nice 28-22ms, in the case of AA the game my lats are now 25ms avg at the server i used for testing, before it was about 80ms avg witch is a huge fall considered the server is belgium(or so dont rember atm really) and i live in denmark, all this said i still have an ide of my Sp2 Patching has to be taken into acount here.. nice tweak btw m8.. :)

I tried this one and I usualy don’t like mixing the reg, but when I looked at the place where this one was going to be implanted I understood that this one could accualy work and won’t do any harm…

From about 90-150-160 latency I’m now about 30 and after about 5hrs playing my top was 41. Doesn’t mater where I’m at in the world.

Works!!! Cheers m8 for showing this for me.

  11. Simoon says:

Hey. For the 2nd step, I got to the microsoft part, but there isn’t a MSMQ folder in there. Please let me know with any assistance regarding this, thanks.

  12. Horns says:

Simply make the folder yourself (New Key)

  13. Tom says:

Anyone know the equivalent mod for a Mac? Thanks

  14. Jonas says:

I would really like to try this one out… but….
    Wont it affect other games?
Will my other games run smooth? Like Call of duty 4,5 and such… because when I am out, my brother likes to play such games

  15. Rees says:

Hi, I tried to use this trick and I did the first part with no problem. however, whenI went in to do the second part,

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters

I was unable to get to the “MSMQ\Parameters” menu. It is not listed in the drop down list of items… Is there something wrong here or should I worry about this part? I changed the first part but have yet to test the theory. Will not doing the second part mess things up?

  16. Destamoon says:

Yea im getting the same problem as well…
    i cant find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters
    can you help please?

  17. Horns says:

It’s answered a few comments up… make the folder

  18. Rees says:

For those of us that are not savy with this sort of thing… How do you go about just “creating” a folder and ensuring that it is in the correct location?

  19. Demoniac says:

It worked for me too mate. from 430 to 150-160ms. one question. does this Affect downloads from torrents or firefox?

  20. Jack says:

I tried it and it didn’t affect my ping at all. In fact, my download speeds went down by half. What the hell went wrong?

  21. Horns says:

As you can see from the comments above, you seem to be the first one with negative results, so I suggest either double-checking if you did everything alright, or reverting the changes.

  22. CJ says:

hmmm this fix lowered my latency for about 5 second before going for 192 to 1500. it also has fucked up my computer causing it to lock up for abour 5 seconds every 20 secondish

  23. Greg says:

This will lower your download speeds and non-real-time packets. In exchange, it will prioritize your real-time packets, making your latency drop.

  24. CJ says:

correction yes it has settled down now i am getting much better latencies this code really works i encourage everyone to use it.
