WoW Embarrassment

It may be considered “socially unacceptable” to tell your friends/familiy/co-workers that you’re an avid World of Warcraft player. The result of any of these people finding out about your dirty secret is embarrassment. Nevertheless, you do your best to hide it—telling lies, making excuses, misdirecting attention, etc.. However, sometimes, despite your best efforts, you slip up and spill it all. This happened to me about two years ago:

I was in the middle of the Nefarion fight at the end of an impossibly long night in Blackwing Lair. Nef had hit his final phase and the pressure was on (we had only downed him once before the previous week); we struggled. I was spamming shadowbolts like it was my job (and it was) when I heard my mother call.

“Sam,” she said, “Get your ass up here; we have company. I’ve been calling you for fifteen minutes.” I looked at the clock and noted it was only ten minutes. However, I fear everything that is my mother (it’s difficult to argue with your mother when she’s absurdly jacked and has a six-pack), and I gave in.

I ran upstairs to be introduced to my mother’s co-worker, Tina. We shook hands and exchanged greetings. “You know,” Tina said to my mother, “I have two children too.”

“Oh yeah,” I responded casually. “What levels are they?”

Tina and my mother looked at me in utter confusion. I smiled politely, not knowing what I had said. After a few seconds of awkward silence, I realized what had just left my mouth. I froze in utter embarrassment. I assessed the situation and banked on Tina’s ignorance of video games. She called my bluff.

“Ah hah,” she laughed. “My sons play those games too. The youth today is so diluted in these ‘games.’ I don’t understand it.”

Now, I being the cunning linguist/asshole that I am replied, “And I don’t think you will, but if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to get my Tier 2 chestpiece.” At which point, I darted back to my room to finish the encounter to avoid the further embarrassment from being caught (and to avoid my mother’s wrath; she can’t beat me with company in the house).

There we have it; my most embarrassing WoW-related moment. This is one of a few of these moments. In San Francisco, for example, I mistook Alcatraz for The Arcatraz. My WoW-played buddy caught me and exposed me to much ridicule from my friends.

So YAWN readers, I ask you: What are your moments of WoW embarrassment (in game too)?

Post them as comments here or email them to me and hopefully I’ll compile them into once nice post.

I hate to bring your mom into this, but can she teach me that doom spell?

I must admit I never slipped and said something like that, but for some reason people get a bit confused when I say “what the fuck”, and I say it often.

I do remember one of my friends saying “lol” a couple of years ago when someone told him a joke tho. That was even more lol than the joke itself.

I, too, have been known to say “lol.” I find it hilarious because it confuses people.

So, I’m in the car with my girlfriend(also plays) and my mother. We’re discussing something, wild animals or the zoo or something, and I pop off with a comment about crocolisks, and just…keep going. I had no idea I’d done it until afterwards, when I hear my girlfriend laughing her ass off and realize what I’d said. She still brings it up(a good 4-5 months later).

Lol I have done some things like that. I say Lol in real life and I have called Alcatraz Arcatraz more times than I would like to remember. The bad thing is I keep getting the two mixed up and I only live like an hour away.

I handle insurance for my company and one day someone e-mailed me regarding insurance in China. They kept saying “BOP” throughout the e-mail and all I could think of was, “Why would an insurance policy be bind on pickup?” It finally hit me that they really meant Beijing Office Park but my husband still won’t let me live it down! Then again he says things like “lawl” (aka lol) which is also kind of odd, so it’s not like he’s one to talk!

My wife and i were watching a movie and LFG appeared on the screen. I was dumbfounded as to why looking for group was on the screen? Maybe a commercial? It is the name of the producing company. Just couldnt get wow out of my head.
