Yet Another Warlock Nerf

I’m calling it now

With the expansion just days away, I’ve been wondering what aspect of the Warlock class will be nerfed when things top off at level 80. So, I’ve concluded: they’re going to nerf Demonic Circle. Yes, you heard correctly. They are going to nerf Demonic Circle.

One more time: They're going to nerf Demonic Circle.

As of now, beta testers have questioned Demonic Circle’s usefulness in PvP. This is because of the 40 yard teleport range, the foresight placing the circle requires, and the inability to use teleport while stunned. However, after careful thought and consideration, I am of the belief that Demonic Circle is underrated. It sounds too good on paper.

Think about it this way: You can teleport out of line of sight. You can teleport up onto higher ground. Now consider this in the arena. The arenas are fairly small as it is; Demonic Circle has to be good in such tight quarters. With proper foresight, the teleport is damn-near abusable. Imagine forcing your fleeing opponent into your circle. He thinks he’s safe, then he rounds the corner to see you standing on your Demonic Circle, charging up that gamebreaking cast. I can only imagine the grins of Warlocks who use the circle to outwit their opponents.

The arena aside, they’re going to nerf the circle simply because it’s fun. This is why we can’t have nice things. The one new combat aspect that we obtain can be ludicrously fun when used properly. Blizzard doesn’t want us to have fun—that’s why they gave knockbacks to Druids, Shaman, and Mages.

Now, once they nerf it, I can see the circle becoming useless. Then they’ll scrap the circle and give us some other gimmicky escape mechanism.

I’m calling it now: Blizzard’s not going to let us have fun.

I know most of you will say that it won’t be useful, but I can see it having its uses in very specific scenarios, particularly in Destruction PvP. It’s seems too obvious that Demonic Circle will incur the QQing of every other class.

What are your predictions for the expansion?

  1. Mace says:

I really doubt it will be nerfed, as Death Knights make it basically inconsequential.

  2. DarkRonin says:

One question I had when I first read about the circle was if you could use it while flag carrying in certain BG’s, now that would be an awesome tactic and would be yet another reason for Blizz to nerf it. Otherwise I don’t see a nerf or change to it happening, there are other classes that can close that gap relatively quickly, yes they will QQ on the forums even though almost all other classes have better escape mechanisms as it is so I would hope blizz would see through their QQ’s.

  3. Mace says:

I assume you can use it while carrying a flag, but how would this make it broken? Mages can blink while carrying the flag, rogues can sprint, druids can travel form, shamans can ghost wolf, etc.

  4. WLambros says:

yea it will become a “crop circle” sooner or later; something strange which doesnt serve any purpose but everyone still looks at it puzzled as its origin is unknown.

  5. DarkRonin says:

never said the ability to use it while carrying a flag would make it broken, just something else blizz could use as an excuse to nerf it, which I personally dont see happening.

Yep reread my post and still don’t see where I said that would make it broken.

  6. Cythrawl says:

It’s extremely powerful when used tactically correctly, although I still feel warlock escape mechanics more than a little bit lacking, and its use scales directly with how good the terrain around you is.

That being said, I don’t doubt you’re right.

I am however rerolling either warrior or death knight, so yeah. I’ll watch and cheer you guys on from afar, and then bonk you on the head. But in a friendly way. A loving way. Probably with the pointy bit.

  7. Caliaelyn says:

I can see this being useful in AV, where you can set your portal by your boss and then pew pew at will outside and then port to your boss to heal.

  8. Ryven says:

I don’t think it’ll get nerfed. I’m personally looking forward to it very much, but i think blizz will explain away any QQ as they’ve done in the past with rogues and such that Demonic Circle requires a lot of skill and forethought to use correctly.

  9. Paimon says:

I completely agree with you in that it will be nerfed..It has to be..if there are any locks out there that think this is useless for pvp then u r a moron…this thing can friggin rock for pvp…i just don’t see how it will be nerfed..longer cooldown? shorter teleport range?

  10. Oh I am with you on this one… not because it indeed will be overpowered but a few clever locks will be able to beat the whinging masses with it each and every time thus invoking a nerf.

But realistically speaking it’s not like there’s anything else left to nerf on a warlock so the circle is going to get it either way.

Maybe they’ll add a soulshard cost to it… every teleport costing you one soul will put a damper on that thing real quick.

I can just see myself farming for shards for 30 minutes after each arena match… wouldn’t that be glorious.

  11. Hah… they’ll nerf it if nothing other than to prevent locks from soloing heroics. Poor mob pathing ftw.

  12. Mageborn says:

Er, why do DKs make it inconsequential again?

  13. Cythrawl says:

    FORCE PULLLLLLLLLL

  14. Mageborn says:

Death Grip is a longer CD than DmC by 5 seconds so in an arena setting, except for the first time you use DmC you have 5 seconds to cast on the DK before you need to be behind a pillar again.
That is of course unless you force the DK to use DG before you use your DmC.

Also, Death Grip does not go through walls, Demonic Circle does :)

I guess I’m just saying that “inconsequential” is a little harsh ;)

  15. Cythrawl says:

    Unholy Command.

No, it doesn’t go through pillars/walls/whatever. It also has less range. But … that’s why he said -basically- inconsequential as opposed to utterly or another similar adjective.

  16. Warpy says:

Keep in mind that your circle is highly visible to your opponents. You won’t be “forcing” a fleeing opponent into it, and they won’t be surprised when you use it.

  17. Oomfire says:

I agree that this ability could be devastating if used correctly, especially against melee classes. Just set it on the raised bridge in the arena (near the center), jump off the bridge whenever melee-attacked, and jump back as soon as they jump off to chase you. There seems to me very little most melee classes could do to counter that (unless feline feral charge lets you jump UP? I haven’t played in awhile so I’m not sure).

It’s the same with pushback, though. Knock an annoying pet off in the middle of the bridge, and it’ll take forever to get back onto you… which is (I fully realize) just another reason why warlocks (who, as a feral druid, have long been one of my “best [read most difficult] enemies”) have taken it on the chin lately (which I am sorry to see). :(
